The majority of the fabric we carry is from Birch Fabrics. Birch Fabrics offers GOTS certified, 100% organic cotton and linen made with low impact dyes. Because the fabric has not been processed with harsh, harmful chemicals, the quality of the cotton is much higher and offers more longevity. Birch Fabrics are milled, woven, and printed in India, the world’s leading producer of organic cotton. Birch is based in California, thus the carbon footprint to ship to us is minimal.
A Local Choice, A Global Impact
Purchasing and promoting organic fiber has a positive ripple effect on the economy, our community, and the planet. Buying organic means you can feel good about the product and the process behind it.
Plus, for every yard of fabric you purchase, we’ll plant a tree 🌳.
The Many Benefits of Organic Cotton
Purchasing organic cotton is one of the most important choices you can make for the environment.
- Conventional cotton is one of the world’s most widely grown crops, but one of the most chemically intensive.
- Organic cotton is safer for humans and the environment; organic farmers can’t use toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or GMO’s.
- Organic cotton farming reduces green house gas emissions, uses less energy and increases carbon storage.
- Organic soil is better able to hold water and reduces the need for irrigation as much as 91%.
- Organic cotton farming increases biodiversity and promotes soil health.
- Growing organic cotton offers increased carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.
When Lana Norton learned the harmful effects of growing conventional cotton through her daughter, who is an environmental biologist, she knew that something had to change in her business. She had owned a fabric and quilting store for five years, but it was time to reassess the impact she was having on the planet. She switched to using exclusively organic fabric, including organic cotton and organic linen, plus organic thread and batting for home sewists in Tujunga.
All of the fabric sold by Earth First Fabrics are GOTS certified organic.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the worldwide standard that assures that the growing, processing, and manufacturing of the organic fibers adhere to the most stringent ecological and social criteria.
A Family-Run Business
Lana Norton and her family (husband, Paul, and daughter, Linnea) are the family behind Earth First Fabrics, which sells exclusively organic fabric, organic thread, and organic batting for home sewists in Tujunga and surrounding communities. The company also offers organic longarm services for quilting.
Earth First Fabrics is proudly owned and operated by the Norton family.

What sets Earth First Fabrics apart from competitors?
Earth First Fabric is a value-driven, family-owned business with the goal of offering organic merchandise and organic longarm quilting services that sustains our planet for future generations. We further our impact by partnering with a nonprofit organization called Trees for the Future. When you buy fabric you plant a tree! We donate funds to plant one tree for every yard of fabric sold.
Why did you start the business?
When I found out the huge impact conventional cotton farming had on the environment, I knew we had to switch to carrying organic cotton, organic linen, and organic thread. Organic and Regenerative Cotton farming is much better for the environment and has the ability to sequester carbon and mitigate climate change.
How do you know your fabric is certified organic?
We sell GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic fabric and thread. GOTS certification assures the highest standard for growing and processing organic cotton while adhering to fair labor standards.
From where do you source the products you sell?
We purchase our products from California and US-based fabric and thread distributors that sell GOTS Certified products.
How can I get involved in your mission?
We offer a monthly Sustainable Sewing Circle for eco-minded sewists interested in learning how they can engage in more environmentally sewing practices and climate activism.
